Workshop Wednesday 12 June, 2pm - 4pm

This is a two hour workshop masterclass in unarmed fighting for theatrical and film purposes, led by Equity Registered Fight Director and Academy of Performance Combat senior instructor Kaitlin Howard.

If characters in a script are driven to violence, then the writer usually has a specific purpose to move the plot forward in this way. This workshop will explore some of the most common basic techniques and safety aspects needed to stage such unarmed violent moments convincingly.

Kaitlin will take participants through various stage combat techniques suitable for use in different media and staging situations, including Proscenium Arch, Thrust and even In The Round. As well as exploring the technical side, Kaitlin’s approach also covers the acting skills needed to convince the audience of the violence so the session will culminate in the setting of a short sequence and performance opportunity on the Coliseum’s main stage.

Suitable for actors and performers wishing to have a taster into a subject which may widen their skill set, those who may wish to refresh their knowledge in this field, or the curious!

Kaitlin Howard is a fully qualified and insured Stage Combat Instructor, affiliated to The APC, and one of only three women on the Equity Register of Fight Directors. Her professional work as an award winning actress, stage combat instructor, fight captain and fight director has led her to be one of the best at her level. The techniques the participants will learn have been tried and tested in performing fights for theatre and film and will give them a flavour of what is required when needed to perform such in a production. Those wishing to attend should consider their own physical ability and should be advised that it is a very physical workshop. Loose clothing and suitable footwear should be worn.
