Educating Rita

Frank:  “Found a culture have you, Rita?  Found a better song to sing? No, you found a different song to sing.”

Worlds collide when Rita, a down to earth hairdresser, meets Frank, a disillusioned academic with a drink problem. Rita doesn't want babies. She wants to improve herself through her Open University Literature course, and Frank's just not sure what he wants anymore.

Both in and out of the classroom, a relationship develops between them. Rita falls for the world of bohemian privilege that is now open to her, and Frank falls more than a little in love with Rita’s free spirit…

As her confidence grows, Franks begins to worry that her thirst for improvement might bury the fascinating woman who has brought him back from the brink.

Willy Russell’s comedy about the collision between class and culture, starring Julie Walters as Rita, won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Comedy in 1980. The BAFTA Award winning film that followed established Julie Walters as a leading British actress.
