When you enter a venue, some of the faces you’ll see on your visit – the ushers and the concession sales people – are people who volunteer their time and friendly faces to contribute to your experience.
Most venues work with a mix of paid staff and volunteers; but the Coliseum is unique in running its front of house customer service experience entirely with volunteers. This means our dream team of theatre-lovers from far and wide play a key part in helping us to make sure that you have the best time possible on your visit; from your arrival in the foyer, to selling you ice cream at the interval, to waving you goodnight.
It also means that, uniquely, our volunteers deliver all of the various tasks that are involved in looking after our audience.
Kyle Wilcock: “I love volunteering at the Coliseum, it is definitely the best voluntary job I’ve ever had! It’s just so nice to come in a couple of nights a week to meet new people and feel as if you’re giving something back to the theatre, whether that be through selling ice creams and programmes or showing people to their seats. The best thing about it is you are volunteering with other like-minded people who all have interesting stories to tell, and of course watching the brilliant Coliseum productions!”
Barbara Grundy: “After being asked to stand in for one night and still being here 34 years later, I still get enjoyment from meeting up with the team and also the general public who support the theatre. I hope I’m putting something back into the Coliseum by being there in repayment for the enjoyment I get in seeing the productions in a very friendly atmosphere.
Also from being involved I had the opportunity to be one of the founder members of Friends of the Coliseum a group who help to raise money for our theatre.”
We take on new volunteers throughout the year and we’re always keen to meet new people who can contribute to our work and who would value the experience of being part of our team.
We’ll be working throughout the coming months to look at how we can enhance the volunteer role even more.
