Oldham’s Cultural Quarter

cultural

The new location will place the Coliseum in the town’s burgeoning Cultural Quarter, at the heart of the town’s cultural renaissance and regeneration.  The new site will mean that Oldham Coliseum Theatre will be better connected to peer organisations like Oldham Gallery, the closed Grade-II listed Victorian library building which is to house the Heritage and Arts Centre opening in 2019, showcasing the story of Oldham’s past from its time as the cotton spinning capital of the world to the present day, and the current Oldham Library.

The four phase programme to deliver the Cultural Quarter will also see the conversion and commercial development of the Local Studies Centre and old Museum buildings to new uses, as well as work to address the future of other heritage buildings on Union Street.  The venues’ close proximity to each other will create an enhanced destination for the people of Oldham, as well as day tourists.  The Cultural Quarter will enable audiences to move around between different sites, facilitating cross art form programming and supporting audiences to try new creative experiences and different art forms.

The four-phase programme to deliver the Cultural Quarter is:

A) A Heritage and Arts Centre in the old library building: alongside Gallery Oldham, Oldham Library and Lifelong Learning Centre * (This is now fully funded and underway. See here for more information);

B) Conversion and commercial development of the Local Studies and old Museum buildings for new uses;

C) A new Coliseum theatre facility: adjacent to the Heritage and Arts Centre;

D) Work to address the future of other heritage buildings on Union Street.

The wider Cultural Regeneration Programme is funded by a mix of public and private sector sources including contributions from Arts Council England, the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Stoller Charitable Trust, and Oldham Council.
