Oldham Coliseum Theatre is committed to developing the work of emerging artists and companies from across the region to explore the stories and issues that affect and reflect the local communities. The Coliseum offers a safe and welcoming creative environment to take your work to the next level.

We’re calling for early/mid-career writers to get involved in the First Break Writing Competition 2017.

From the plays submitted, four writers will be selected to have their work professionally debuted as rehearsed readings as part of the First Break Festival, which runs from Thursday 22 June – Saturday 1 July 2017. The festival is a great opportunity to showcase new writing in front of a supportive audience.

The winning writers will also benefit from:

  • The support of a professional director
  • Dramaturgical support, to mentor you through the development of your work
  • Plays performed by professional actors
  • Access to tech and studio support
  • Guidance through the process from page to stage
  • Networking opportunities with other writers and industry contacts

Entries for the 2017 writing competition should follow the following theme:

Futurist:
noun: A person who studies the future and makes predictions about it based on current trends.

The social and political landscape of the North West and beyond is constantly changing. Brexit, local regeneration, welfare state, US elections, Toblerones are shrinking; how may these affect the future of you and those around you? What are your predictions for your community in one, two, or five years’ time? Will the North West still be as we know it, or will it be unrecognisable?

Plays should last no longer than 15 minutes and feature a maximum of four characters.

To enter the competition we ask that you submit your play by email and include your name, age, email address, contact number and location.

Please send your entries with the subject line ‘First Break 2017’ to: chrislawson@coliseum.org.uk

The closing date for receipt of entries is: Friday 17 February 2017.

Due to the large number of entries we expect to receive, we regret that we are unable to provide individual feedback.
